What Is a DeKalb County Crash Report?

A crash report is an official document created by law enforcement after a crash. It typically includes details such as the time, location, and parties involved, along with statements, diagrams, and preliminary fault assessments. It serves as a formal record of the incident and outlines what officers observed at the scene.

Why Does the Crash Report Matter?

According to Georgia law, law enforcement officers are required to complete a DeKalb County accident report for any wreck that results in injury, death, or over $500 in property damage. This report becomes a part of the official legal record and is often used as key evidence in court or settlement negotiations.

In many cases, the crash report helps prove fault, especially if the other party violated traffic laws. It may also identify witnesses or reveal if a commercial vehicle was involved, triggering additional legal obligations.

Here’s How to Get Your DeKalb County Accident Report

There are two main ways to obtain a copy of your DeKalb County collision report, each with different steps and requirements.

1. Request Your DeKalb County Police Report Online

The most convenient way to obtain your report is through the BuyCrash Georgia website, which hosts crash reports for many Georgia law enforcement agencies, including the DeKalb County Police Department.

To search for your report, you’ll need the date of the incident and at least one of the following:

  • The crash report number (issued by the officer at the scene)
  • The vehicle identification number (VIN) of a car involved
  • The driver’s license number of the driver involved

Online reports typically cost $0 to $5-$15, depending on the delivery format and number of copies. Payment is made directly on the site using a credit or debit card. Once purchased, the report can be downloaded immediately or emailed to you.

Note: Reports are generally available within 3 to 5 business days after the incident, depending on how quickly the investigating officer files it.

2. Request in Person or by Mail from the DeKalb County Police Department

If you prefer not to use an online service, you can obtain your DeKalb County crash report directly from the DeKalb County Police Department’s Central Records Unit.

For in-person requests, visit the DeKalb County Police Department, 1960 W. Exchange Place, Tucker, GA 30084 from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (excluding holidays). Bring a valid government-issued ID and as much crash information as possible (report number, date, location, etc.).

For mail requests, fill out the accident request form and send it to the DeKalb County Police Department Records Division at the address above. Be sure to include a $5 check or money order made payable to the DeKalb County Police Department.

In-person requests are typically fulfilled the same day. Mail requests may take up to two weeks, depending on volume and postal delivery times.
